Federal Reserve and SIFMA holiday schedules 2026–2027

Three records decide whether the money side of the country is working on a given day, and they are not the same list. The Federal Reserve publishes the days its Banks are closed, which is the list bank branches follow. SIFMA publishes a recommended schedule for the U.S. bond market — the only one of the three that carries early closes as well as closings. The exchange keeps its own calendar for stocks. Here they are side by side, day by day.
The days they agree are easy and nobody searches them. The days worth knowing are the ones below, where one record says closed and another says ordinary business.
The days a bank holiday and a market holiday come apart
Banks and the bond market close; the stock market trades
Federal holidays the exchange does not observe. Bank lobbies are shut, the bond market is shut on SIFMA's recommendation, and stocks trade a full session.

The stock market closes; the banks do not
The other direction, and the one that catches people out: a market closing that is not a holiday anywhere else. Good Friday closes the exchange and no federal office in the country. A Saturday holiday does something stranger — the exchange moves its closing to the Friday before and the Federal Reserve Banks do not, so the market is dark while the branch on the corner keeps ordinary hours.

The Federal Reserve's own rule, in short: a holiday falling on a Saturday leaves the Reserve Banks and Branches open the preceding Friday, though the Board of Governors closes; a holiday falling on a Sunday closes every Federal Reserve office the following Monday. Each record names only its own days, so a table that lines all three up has gaps in it. A cell marked "not on this schedule" is a day that record does not name at all: the word above it says what that day is for them — an ordinary business day, or a weekend — and their schedule says nothing about it either way.

What each record actually is
The Federal Reserve schedule
Published as K.8, "Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System", it names the days the Federal Reserve Banks are closed — no Fedwire, no settlement, no funds moving between banks. Most banks close their lobbies on the same days, which is why "bank holiday" and "Federal Reserve holiday" end up meaning the same thing in ordinary speech. They are not the same claim, though: individual banks set their own hours, and a few branches open on days most are shut.
The SIFMA recommended schedule
The U.S. bond market has no exchange to close. Trading happens over the counter between dealers, so SIFMA — the trade association those dealers belong to — recommends the closings and early closes, and the desks follow the recommendation. It covers the trading of U.S. government securities, mortgage- and asset-backed securities, investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds, municipal bonds, and secondary money-market trading. A recommendation is not a rule, and this site never writes it as one.
The exchange calendar
The third list, and the one people mean by "is the market open". It is shorter than the Federal Reserve's — the exchange trades on Columbus Day and Veterans Day — and longer in one place, because it closes on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday at all. Its shortened sessions end at 1pm Eastern rather than SIFMA's 2pm.
The questions people type
Is the bond market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?
No. Both are on the SIFMA recommended schedule as full closes, and both are Federal Reserve holidays, so the bond market and the banks are shut together — while the stock market trades a normal session. They are the two days a year the difference between a bank holiday and a market holiday is most visible.
Are banks open on Good Friday?
Yes, at almost every branch. Good Friday is not a federal holiday and the Federal Reserve schedule does not name it, so bank lobbies keep ordinary hours — while the stock market closes for the whole day. The bond market falls in between: SIFMA recommends a full close in most years and a noon close in the years the monthly employment report lands that morning.
What time do the early closes end?
SIFMA’s recommended early closes are 2pm Eastern, and its Good Friday recommendation, in the years it applies, is noon Eastern. The stock market’s own shortened sessions are different again: they end at 1pm Eastern. Every early close on this page carries its own time, from the record that recommends it.
Does SIFMA close the bond market?
Not in the way an exchange closes. There is no bond exchange to shut — the market trades over the counter, dealer to dealer — so SIFMA publishes a recommendation to market participants and the desks follow it. That is why every bond-market row on this site says "recommends" and never "the bond market is required to close".
Is the Federal Reserve holiday schedule the same as the federal holiday list?
The days are the same eleven. What differs is the weekend rule: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal offices take the Friday before, and the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday — only the Board of Governors closes. A Sunday holiday closes everything the following Monday.
