When is Eid al-Adha?

Updated August 24, 2026 · this page carries the 2026 and 2027 dates.

Eid al-Adha — the festival of sacrifice at the height of the Hajj pilgrimage — is the second of the two great Eids, and on the American closing calendar it looks like the first: banks, mail, markets, federal offices, and delivery all run their normal schedules.

Schools are again the exception that varies: districts that close for Eid al-Fitr — New York City among them — generally close for Eid al-Adha too. The date follows the Islamic lunar calendar and lands about eleven days earlier each year, confirmed by moon sighting, so expected dates can shift by a day.

Questions people ask

Is anything closed for Eid al-Adha in the US?

On the national calendars, no — banks, mail, the markets, and federal offices all run normally. The closures that exist are local: school districts that observe the Eids, and Muslim-owned businesses taking the day. Everything else is a regular day.

Why is Eid al-Adha on a different day in different countries?

It falls on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, and each country's religious authority confirms that month's start by moon sighting — so Saudi Arabia (whose date sets the Hajj) can be a day apart from South Asia or North America. U.S. communities split between following the Saudi date and a local or calculated one.
