When is Eid al-Fitr?
Updated August 24, 2026 · this page carries the 2026 and 2027 dates.
Eid al-Fitr — the festival ending Ramadan's month of fasting — is one of the two biggest days of the Muslim year, and in the U.S. it lives almost entirely outside the official closing calendars: banks, mail, the markets, and federal offices all run normally.
The exception is schools. A growing list of districts closes for Eid al-Fitr — New York City schools have since 2016, and districts in New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia, Texas, and elsewhere have followed — making it the one place the holiday shows up as a closure. The date itself is confirmed by moon sighting the night before, so it can shift by a day from the expected date on any printed calendar, including this one.
| Year | Falls on |

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, confirmed by the sighting of the new crescent moon — the date can shift by a day and can differ by a day between countries and between moon-sighting methods.

Questions people ask
Do schools close for Eid al-Fitr?
Some do. New York City public schools have closed for both Eids since 2016, and districts in New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia, Texas, and other states with large Muslim communities have added the day. Most U.S. districts remain open, often excusing absences instead — the district calendar is the only reliable answer.
Why does Eid al-Fitr's date change every year, and why is it sometimes a day off from the calendar?
Eid falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar, which moves about eleven days earlier each year against the standard calendar. The day is confirmed by sighting the new crescent moon the evening before, so the actual celebration can land a day before or after the expected printed date — and different countries and communities can celebrate on different days.
Are banks or the stock market closed for Eid?
No — Eid al-Fitr isn't a bank, market, or federal holiday in the U.S., so branches keep regular hours and the exchanges run a normal session.
