Is the DMV open today?
Page last rebuilt August 26, 2026 (UTC) · it carries the 2026 and 2027 dates.
That question has fifty answers, because there is no national DMV — each state runs its own licensing offices and closes them on its own list. What is true everywhere: those offices keep weekday business hours, and all fifty states shut them for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Everything past that list is where the states part company, and the table below counts the split holiday by holiday.

A state counts as open on a holiday its own published list does not name. No state's answer is taken from another state's, and nothing here is filled in from the federal list. When a schedule for a new year has not been published yet, this page says so — it never guesses.
Not one state's licensing offices close for December 26, Easter Sunday, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Lunar New Year — those are days the exchanges, the calendar or a faith community keep, and the DMV works through them.
The days only one state takes off
Beyond the federal list, states keep days of their own — election days, a statehood day, a founder's birthday. These are the dated ones on this site's 2026 lists.

The questions people type
Is the DMV open today?
It depends on your state. Driver licensing is run state by state, and each state closes its offices on its own list — all fifty close for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and after that the lists part company. The table on this page says which states close for which holiday, and the line at the top of the page names today against it.
Are DMV offices open on weekends?
Driver-licensing offices keep weekday business hours, so a Saturday or Sunday visit is not the normal way in. Where a state does open an office at the weekend it publishes that itself, and your state page here links straight to the agency page that would say so.
Do state DMV offices close when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
Sometimes, and the states disagree, so this site will not answer it in one sentence. Federal offices move a Saturday holiday to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after; some states move their licensing offices with them and some do not. California's own holiday page says July 3, 2026 is a regular business day at its field offices even though Independence Day falls that Saturday. When a holiday lands on a weekend in 2026–2027, your state's page is the one to read.
Which holidays close the most DMV offices?
The ones every state keeps: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The closest splits are Columbus Day (24 of 50), Black Friday (28 of 50) and Juneteenth (32 of 50) — the table on this page counts every one of them.

Two clocks are at work here. The signs and the next-few-days table read the clock on the device you are holding, so they are right whenever you open this page. The stamp above is the other one: the day this page itself was last rebuilt, in UTC. Nothing on this page is frozen to that date.
Every row above is read off the state agency's own holiday page, linked from that state's page here, verified August 2026.
